A virtual tour of the water–industrial estates in Łódź has been developed using aerial imaging acquired with the use of a drone. It constitutes an integral component of an educational project prepared as part of a study visit by staff and students of spatial planning from the University of Groningen to the Faculty of Management at the University of Łódź in April 2026. The virtual tour enables participants to familiarize themselves with the designated area prior to the study visit. During fieldwork sessions, it additionally provides access to educational materials attached to the aerial imagery, which, in a non-conventional manner, facilitate the analysis of the urban composition of the examined part of the city.
The virtual tour, based on panoramic drone imagery, encompasses seven areas comprising the so-called water–industrial estates, which were formed in the second half of the nineteenth century as a compact industrial complex along the valley of the Jasień River. As part of the fieldwork activities, the development of these estates during the period of “industrial Łódź” will be presented, along with a discussion of the processes of their spatial and functional transformation, including revitalization, following the decline of the textile industry.
